Jerry Roedell

December 29 1929 – April 23 1995

A Native of Peoria Illinois and Declared the Most Popular Stock Car Driver of All Times By the Racing Fans at the Peoria Speedway in 1987.

Jerry Loved his Fans and Proved it too By Giving his Victory Checkered Flags through the Fence for Many Years While the Fans Returned Many Cakes for Jerry and His Crew to Enjoy, Both a Huge Fan Tradition at Peoria.

Jerry's Racing Career Started in the Peoria Area in 1950 at the Peoria (Mt. Hawley) Speedway and Death Valley Speedway. He answered the Call to Serve Our Great Nation in the United States Army During the Korean Conflict.

Racing Resumed on Return Home in the Coupe Division Teaming with Mechanic Walt Stodghill of Buda Illinois in #221 Ford.

In 1954 He Started the Season in the “Messer” Tuned # 54 Ford and the Heat and Feature Checkered Flags Started to be a Common thing for Jerry in the Central Illinois Racing Scene and Finishing in a Season High Third Position in the Final Season Point Standings at Peoria and Lincoln Speedways.

Success Continued with Roedell in 1956 and 1957 as He Teamed with Lee Morgan in the #3 Coupe. 1958 Brought the Most Wins for Jerry to Date at Peoria in the Coupe Division with the Harold Render Owned “City of El Paso” Ford previously Chauffered by Lloyd Caldwell Winning Every Feature Event that Roedell Entered and Capturing the Season Point Championship for the Team.

The 1959 Season saw Roedell Moving up to the New Late Model Division with the Purchase of a 1957 Chevrolet from I.M.C.A. Driver Lenny Funk of Otis, Kansas. The New Team of the R.S. Murphy Builders Special #3 with Mechanic Walt Stodghill proved Jerry to be one of the Best in His Class as He Racked Up Win after Win for the Next 3 Years Especially at the Peoria and Sterling Speed Bowl Tracks. Popular Victories came easy at Peoria Speedway with the 1959 Season Championship Race, the 1960 Mid-Season and Season Championship Wins and the 1960 Pro Division Point Championship. In the 1961 Season Roedell held Track Records at Peoria for the 6, 10, 25 and 50 Lap Race Events. Jerry's Ultimate Win Came on October 01 of 1961 when He Won the Prestigious “Illinois State Championship” Race at the Peoria Speedway Winning the Six Foot Tall Trophy over Great Drivers Don Bohlander, Lloyd Caldwell, Don Dane and Al Terrell. He also won the 1961 Season Point Championship Crown at the Sterling Speed Bowl Track in Sterling Illinois.

In 1960 Jerry was Chosen by to Drive the Roy Burdick Owned #55 T-Bird Out of Omaha, Nebraska at the October 16 “National 400” Charlotte Motor Speedway NASCAR Event Starting 28th. And Finishing 31st. after suffering a Mechanical Break-Down. With a full time Offer to Continue into the Next Season, Jerry Refused the Offer Because of the Love for his Family and Chose to Stay with Local Racing where his Support from the Family was Most Enjoyed from his Wife Pat, Daughters Gerri & Roxy and Son Dana.

Jerry Continued Racing with Much Success in the Mid-West Racing Circles where ever He Participated Driving Stock Cars for Such Owners as Don McMahill and Jim Kimball until Retirement in 1976.
